Project Idea: Masculinity in Movement

It occurred to me recently that the reason that there is this fear of trans and gender nonconforming people from the people in power is because we are a threat to the existing power structures. In the climate of anti-trans rhetoric we now find ourselves in, it is really, really important to continue to be a threat, and be more of a threat to those power structures by making trans art, and getting as many people to see it as possible, because the reason we are a threat to the power structures is because they're built on an idea of the world which is defined by these rigid and ill-defined ideas of sex and gender which are used to uphold the patriarchy and white supremacy. Once people start to realise that it's not as simple as man/woman, the laws and social constructions that keep those things in place will be a lot easier to break down.
I'd like to devise a movement theatre piece that explores masculinity and being a man in a trans body. I received a question from a young (cisgender) man who has known me for a long time- since before I started my transition and since he was born. He is now 15 and surrounded with all the things 15 year olds are surrounded with, and he asked me how I knew that I was a man. We discussed for a long time what we thought being a man is and how does one know- I do know, I've known for a long time, and so does he, but it's not something either of us are able to put into words. The piece I'd like to make would be an attempt to go into that. It would also be a piece that celebrates masculinity- I think that this is the way of fighting against toxic masculinity and misogyny- asking questions such as, “what makes a man?” And “how do I want to be a man in this world” “what does being a man mean to me?” And "what is a healthy and fulfilling way to be a masculine man?”.

I am a trans man, I am also a masculine queer man, and I am comfortable and happy and at ease in my body. I'd like to put that kind of a trans and queer experience on stage. I think that the trans community could do with something which gives us real pride, and I think this piece would be empowering, and I also think that the wider community would benefit from a trans person's thoughts and ideas on what it means to be a man.

Anyways if you'd like to fund this project, don't hesitate to drop me a message:)
